Jake,

I used to enjoy your content and was sad to see you step away from the community. I thought you had well reasoned takes (even though we didn’t always agree) and backed it up with solid soccer acumen. I was equally excited to see you came back.

I am however extremely disappointed to see you throw a hit piece out on other people without any facts to back it up. It is one thing to call people “not reputable,” but I expect you to at least share examples of why. The people you mention use this as a stream of income and directly attacking that is BS.

I was waiting for you to explain how you know Pete’s sources are bogus or how Straight Red has continually gotten it wrong. But no… it was just a piece attacking others with no backing in facts. I find this funny because this is exactly what you are accusing them of.

I, like you, have no real sources and don’t report information other than speaking to conjecture I see online. But there are some people in the community who have worked hard to build relationships with players and people inside the Fed. Discrediting them without any proof is shameful, pathetic and frankly screaming for attention.

Do drastically better!!

Signed,

A now former subscriber, reader and fan

Thanks for your feedback Adam! Hope you’re doin well and sad to see you go.

Nice response. Usually enraging to receive a polite response. Too bad you didn't write “Thanks for reading.”

It was Eric Wynalda who first Said Matt Crocker had to leave the euros to come here to deal with the situation. Derek and Pete were just repeating what Wynalda made public.

How about you do some fucking research instead of just making false claims with no backing. All this criticism of poor journalism yet your being a hypocrite doing the same thing just because you got your feelings hurt.

Expand full comment

How’s that lol? I’m chillin man. Also, you’re*.

Expand full comment

Chillin'? Yet attacking fellow US Soccer YouTube guys for what? Being proactive? The guys you named as reputable reporters would never push the USSF for threat of loss of access. And you want people to burn their sources??? Jake, love most of your content, but this was unnecessary and inappropriate.

How is saying straight red is great entertainment but not reputable sources for news attacking them?

Expand full comment

Imo, it’s only inappropriate in this context because the article doesn’t provide any supporting evidence to back its claim (which reads particularly strikingly given the article’s topic, as another reader pointed out—s/o Adam). On its face, the assertion doesn’t check out to me personally, since while entertainment is certainly a (or likely the) major focus of the show, the SRC has legitimately introduced and subsequently fleshed out a small handful of newsworthy topics (as well as a 100-gallon tankard full of absolutely absurd and silly ones) to the discourse, more than a couple of which would go on to be “broken” some weeks or even months later by major media outlets (I believe you’d term these “real journalists”). I’d challenge listeners or yourself to find a discussion of one of these then-rumors that wasn’t introduced to the show with an “it’s certainly plausible, but take it with a grain of salt for now” heedance or a “this is from my source who’s been reliable over the years when it comes to topic X but who can be a bit hit-or-miss on topic Y.”

Also, why not shoot Derek or Brett a quick message before publishing the article? They seem to respect your work and always mention(*ed) you in a positive light. And if not out of professional or neighborly courtesy, one would think reaching out to two of the principal subjects of the article you’re working on would be a good place to start collecting the supporting evidence the piece doesn’t currently feature. Brett and Derek have been professionally analyzing; entertaining; and, yes, even reporting on US soccer since before I and perhaps you were old enough to have any idea what the phrase “four, four, two” referred to outside of our best friends’ ages. Since the topic is their credibility, it’s worth mentioning that Brett Corbin and (Mr. President) Derek Richey essentially co-created a whole ass professional club out of nothing by founding the supporters group for a team that didn’t yet exist and then organizing just about everything it takes to start a pro club in the US, from building grassroots fan support, to securing owners + funding, to picking the colors on the kit [1,2]—and Indy Eleven’s still kicking along to this day (though likely not for long, sadly), sitting 3rd in the USL Eastern Conference and currently up one-goal-to-nil on Atlanta for a spot in the Open Cup semis as I write this. These guys have done more groundwork growing USA soccer from all different angles than most anyone; I’d think they would have to be some real enormous a-holes (hmm, on second thought …) to avoid still sharing a pint or a phone call with an old friend or colleague who’s climbed their way up that slippery-toward-the-top soccer pyramid of ours.

I appreciate the civility of your comments section and hope your content, health + family, and future coaching career(‽) all thrive. My favorite memory from your channel was when you once banged in two straight goals on an old USMNT FIFA playthrough and you shouted me out for correctly predicting the goalscorers (Musah and Weah, I believe?)—ahh, good times. Also, if you need a proper editor to iron out those hyphen-space-hyphen monstrosities burning holes in my eyes and taking the em dash’s rightful place or to mop up all those capitalization issues you sprinkled in to trigger me, I can start Monday—I’ll even throw in a bonus retraction section at the end of this piece free of charge. ;)

You know what? Totally fair on reaching out them. That’s a drawback of mine. Knowing I wouldn’t mind if someone wrote this about me I wouldn’t care but I can see how this can come across as an unexpected and unnecessary commentary on them. Sorry Brett and Derek for that part.

Why did you take shots at The Straight Red Card? They are honest guys who do have sources inside US Soccer and if they do get something wrong they always correct it.

"Silent on this news were reputable reporters like Brian Tannenwald, Tom Bogert, Doug Mcintyre, and Paul Tenorio"

And yet they have also failed to report on something we *know* did happen, namely that a meeting took place of the Board of US Soccer where they discussed what to do about the USMNT loss. (If you doubt that the Board met, use some of those sources you have and ask them if it happened.) And yet, none of those major outlet reporters have said a word about it.

The major issue, which is also a major dysfunction of the US Soccer ecosystem, is the total failure of major media outlets to hold US soccer executives accountable. USSF has largely been successful in trading access to players, questions, interviews, etc. for favorable coverage. None of the people you listed are willing to risk that.

Besides, I could ask (but I wouldn't), if they knew the Crocker rumor was false, why haven't they reported that? Either way, relying on the dog that didn't bark for these guys is foolish.

And so I return to the portion I quoted, which I reject as proof of anything other than the continued inadequacy of those individuals as information sources.

Crocker rumor about going to the Euros is true and not only that, US Soccer paid for his trip to Germany. Eric Wynalda reported this and he is a reliable source.

Expand full comment

Wynalda makes a living on stirring drama with unverified rumors. He has not reported one confirmed thing in years. He burned every bit of credibility by trying to stir up drama. He even apologized for reporting false information as fact regarding Gio and Gregg on his radio show.

I’ve known Wynalda since 2011 after he contacted me and gave me his number after my first article on my site World Soccer Source. Wynalda said that Gio wasn’t actually injured, which was true, so what he said about Gio was true. Sebi & Herc called him a liar even though he isn’t one and the info was right: Gregg Berhalter wasn’t benching Gio Reyna because he was injured. It was for something else. This was true.

You lost me. I have enjoyed your stuff for the most part, but you have to do better. You more or less supported Gregg for a while, during which others were more proactive and pointing to red flags (e.g. world cup qualifying away record, roster selection, and pretty much all his games since his return) and since the Colombia spanking, you started to jump ship. Now that you are attacking those people who were consistent and give no evidence to support it? Just because you think you are not qualified to be trusted, does not mean you now have the authority to claim others are not qualified. You just have to improve yourself so that you are qualified and stop being petty against those who were right where you were wrong. I am sorry I have to say it this way, you seem like a nice guy, but this whole article is very petty.

Jake, would you like me to respond to Adam Turner? I did on X already.

Please don’t and I don’t even want to know what it says

Does he send you insulting DMs too? That’s what he does to me.

No he's very respectful in his criticism.

He called you pathetic. That’s not respectful and that’s not criticism. Then again, you yourself were very disrespectful in your Lletget comments when you accused him of not giving his all and where you said he should have removed himself from the roster. Maybe he’ll give you some lessons one day or sign a jersey for you.

Anybody can say what they would like about me, it doesn't bother me.

You might find this amusing. I used to get non-stop abuse from people like Rob Usry for saying that Benny Feilhaber or Freddy Adu should play the 10. Rob Usry thought Feilhaber basically couldn't kick the ball. Any time I tweeted about either player, he would tweet anyone who responded to me that I was an f-ing idiot because I rated Feilhaber. I got worse abuse for Adu tweets. Usry once tweeted me "Go k*ll yourself."

I too have been wondering how 11 Yanks & The Straight Red Card have sources since Christian Pulisic and even GIo Reyna now seem to like Gregg. They aren't DM'ing these guys. How would they even get information? You really irritated the Straight Red Card guys today. I try to give them as much shit as possible since I was really nice to them years ago and they were very condescending and dismissive of me when I supported their show. Your videos have way more views than theirs. You're getting the same numbers as Tac & Pete unless it's a post-game or roster video.

Lol Gio likes Gregg. What are the players supposed to say???? You've seen how Gregg deals with dissenters. Sheesh. "I try to give them as much shit as possible" but aren't you the dude who blocks everyone??? You seem like a realllll solid dude.

Expand full comment

I only give shit to people who have been insulting to me. I simply respond to them insulting me. Why should I value your opinion or respect you? You think people shouldn’t block obnoxious people, but rather take the abuse. You’re supposed to block anyone who says something insulting or rude to you. People are supposed to politely respond to you online. Most of you guys are the type who write “LOL” in response to everyone and all throughout your response or tweet. That’s laughing at someone. Jordan Peterson calls you guys “psychotic troll demons” because of the asocial thrill in insulting people from behind a screen. You guys are normally anonymous too. You simply can’t politely discuss soccer with any civility.
